Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the morphology and biometrics of the renal artery in adult in Burkina Faso by a computed tomography study

Materials and methods: This was a descriptive and analytical study with prospective data collection, over a period of 10 months from January 1, 2019 to October 31, 2019. We performed abdominal CT with injection of contrast product in 150 subjects. These subjects had no history of abdominal disease or surgery and had no renal vascular disease. For each artery we determined its level of origin, the number of renal arteries, the terminal branches, the length and the diameter.

Results: the mean age was 42.39 ± 14.80 years with extremes from 18 to 75 years. The most common origin level of the arteries on both sides was that of the first lumbar vertebra (L1). Supernumerary renal arteries were found in 22% of the right renal arteries and 9% of the left renal arteries. Two terminal branches were noted on 93% of the right renal arteries and 86% of the left renal arteries. The mean length of the right renal artery was 43.82 ± 8.59 mm and that of the left 32.26 ± 8.35 in men (p ≤0.05); in women it was 38.42 ± 8.28 mm for the right and 29.37 ± 7.81mm for the left (P≤0.05). The average diameter of the right renal artery in men was 5.78 ± 1.01 mm and on the left 5.93 ± 1.19 mm. In women, it was 5.52 ± 0.80 mm for the right and 5.69 ± 0.88 mm for the left (p ≤ 0.05).

Conclusion: In our study, the most common origin level of the renal arteries is L1. There is a supernumerary artery in 9% of patients. The diameter and length of the renal arteries are greater in men. The right renal arteries are smaller and longer than the left renal arteries
