Abstract

Objective. Knowing the growth and maturation stages of a child, teenager or adult allows us to compare their developmental and chronological age. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of the Demirjian method's estimate of 18 years of age and to examine the applicability of this method to Senegalese subjects aged 14 to 24 years.

Methodology. Panoramic radiographs of Senegalese subjects aged 14 to 24 years were examined. Maturation of the third left mandibular molar, the 38 according to the Demirjian stages, was used and was associated with the civil age of each subject. The performance of the

maturation stages F, G, H in the civil majority estimation was assessed by sensitivity and specificity. The statistical analysis was performed with the Student t-test. The level of significance has been set at p˂0.05.

Results. A total of 165 panoramic radiographs of Senegalese subjects were analyzed. The age of 18 years was reached at stage G in Senegalese subjects, with 18.44±1.42 years for women and 18±1.54 years for men. There was no significant difference by gender p=0.48. The apical closure of the third molar is done in Senegalese at 20.7±2.3 years in girls and 21±1.6 years in boys corresponding to stage H of Demirjian. For discrimination at the age of 18, stage G had good sensitivity (87.1%) and specificity (86.4%).

Conclusions. The results of this study show the applicability and accuracy of Demirjian's method in estimating the civil majority in Senegalese subjects.

Conclusions.
