Pneumomediastinum is a rare condition in pediatric patients and may be associated with any predisposing pulmonary disease, including asthma. Its incidence is estimated at 1/32,896 in the general population. Asthma is the most common associated condition in children, with a frequency of 38.4%.
Standard chest X-ray is the first investigation performed for its diagnosis; however, chest computed tomography without contrast injection is more sensitive for detecting small amounts of mediastinal air.
We report here two cases of spontaneous pneumomediastinum diagnosed by CT scan, a complication of acute asthma at the Lomé University Hospital.
