Abstract

Introduction-objective: As interventional procedures gain increasing importance in cardiovascular investigations, knowledge and implementation of radiation protection (RP) measures become mandatory. The purpose of this study was to assess RP knowledge and practices among catheterization laboratory workers at Abidjan Heart Institute.

Materials and methods: Cross-sectional KAP (knowledge, attitudes, and practices) survey from 13, august to 9, September 2022 including 44 health workers (16 physicians, 9 residents/fellows, 12 nurses, 5 imaging operators and 2 caregivers). Data were collected based on an anonymous questionnaire drafted by an interventional cardiologist. Based on 10 questions, a RP knowledge score was created.

Results: Mean age was 41.6 ± 9.8 years old. There was a male predominance (sex-ratio = 3.4). Most of half of the health workers (65.9%) had less than 5 years of active service in the catheterization laboratory. The majority of health workers (77.3%) had not received RP training. Only five (11.4%) had a good level of knowledge in RP (score ≥ 7). Only RP training was associated with an increase of the level of knowledge of RP (p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Both RP knowledge and practices are inadequate among health workers in Abidjan Heart Institute catheterization laboratory. The need for training in our context is required.
